Event Details

Created for school audiences, Ngā Tūtakitanga Tuatahi – First Meetings
is an upbeat bi-cultural celebration of Aotearoa today.

Following the basic structure of a pōwhiri (Māori ceremony of welcome),
the show introduces students to Māori musical instruments and orchestral instruments,
teaching them about the differences and similarities and how different cultures
use musical instruments in similar ways.  The musicians also portray in
dramatic and musical form the first meeting between Māori and Europeans, in
Golden Bay 350 years ago.

The show was created by dramatist Dave
Armstrong in collaboration with taonga puoro artist Rob Thorne, and is
performed by Rob Thorne together with Orchestra Wellington’s brass and
percussion players. The show will be performed 50 times between April and November 2019.

Orchestra Wellington’s programme for Tuia 250 received funding through Lottery Tuia – Encounters 250.
